The power for these cameras can come directly from the network ('Power over LAN' or 'Power over ethernet').

Alexa accuracy

Leaving aside the question of whether the Alexa web traffic monitoring system (owned by Amazon) is Spyware or not, I was asked this week how accurate its figures are.

Testing one of our sites which we know receives 19,000 visits per week, Alexa came back that we were actually getting an average of 1.6 visits! Clearly this is a fair bit out.

This article seems to confirm our result, and explains how easily the system can be abused...

Dynamic Charts in Excel

Some excellent notes on using OFFSET and named formulas to help create dynamic charts in excel HERE

Here's a summary of the parameters available in OFFSET, courtesy of http://www.meadinkent.co.uk/xloffsetchoose.htm ...

"OFFSET returns a value from a cell which is at a specified number of rows and columns away from a particular cell reference. It is in the format: =OFFSET(BaseRef, Rows, Cols, RowRange, ColRange) . BaseRef is a cell address from which the number of Rows and Columns are counted (a relative reference) and can be located anywhere on your worksheet (although the top left hand corner of a table is conventional). RowRange and ColRange are optional and can specify a height and width of a range of cells (e.g. 4 rows high by 1 columns wide would represent all of the values for one of the months in the table below)."

Easier ways to print a complete website?

Where I work we have need to print out every page of many websites each week. This has been done the usual, lond-winded way - visit each page, File > Print. This laborious task was complicated by the fact that many of the links on these sites go to anchors on the same pages, so the person printing these had to make sure they didn't print duplicates.

There had to be a better way.

A web trawl turned up this page, giving instructions on how to print whole sites in Internet Explorer. This is ok as far as it goes, but doesn't work in all circumstances. For instance, the navigation method on the sites we need to print is purely by javascript jump menu. The method stated here doesn't pick up javascript links at all.

The best solution I can find so far is a bit of a compromise, but does speed up the job. It uses a program I'd never heard of before called Web PrintSmart 2.0 by HP. This is available free, but, as far as I can tell, can't be found on the HP websites any more. You can still find copies out there, hosted by various people. At time of writing you could find this at http://www.poolemporium.com/wps20.zip

It basically allows you to quickly make a 'collection' of pages by clicking through a site, then you can print them all at once with a couple of clicks. If you try this, make sure to turn on the option to automatically add pages to your collection (in the edit menu).
