Sharper images in Flash

Tips from an old issue of .NET...

If your image is a JPEG, double-click it in the library, check the 'Use imported JPEG data' box and uncheck 'Allow smoothing'.

If it's a GIF, uncheck 'Allow smoothing' and make sure it has a one pixel transparent border (?!!)

I've used Flash a little at work but never noticed imported graphics being degraded. Maybe this only applies to an earlier version of Flash?

EasyCleaner

EasyCleaner is a freeware utility for cleaning files and registry entries you don't need off your machine. Be warned though, programs like this can break things (see the blacklist updates on the homepage, which shows programs it used to break!)

If you do decide to give this software a spin, you might want to avoid messing with duplicate files, and stick to just unneccessary files and the registry (after backing this up first, natch).

Services guide

A guide to windows services from the elder geek. There are lots of these around but this is the first I've seen which starts with a note that changing the services settings is pretty much a waste of time!

"Frankly, I don't recommend you change any of the services from the default installation of XP. Yes, you may pick up a tiny performance gain by fiddling with the settings, but it won't be anything substantial."

MS Office viewers

Don't have MS Office but need to view an MS Office document? You could install OpenOffice, or NeoOffice for Mac OS X, (which are both free) or you could use a free viewer from Microsoft.

Outlook 2000 hangs on exit

When closing Outlook 2000 it hangs with the message "Please wait while Microsoft Outlook exits" and has to be shut down from task manager. To fix this, first run microsoft office update to bring your copy up to service pack 3, then there is a hotfix for this issue which can be found in various places on the web (eg. http://djbumrush.com/outlook.html at time of writing).

Font Identification

Two really handy online tools to help you identify a font.

http://www.identifont.com/
This one works by asking you a series of questions about the letters of the font, eventually coming up with one or a handful of suggested fonts. In my experience it is very accurate.

http://www.myfonts.com/WhatTheFont/
Here, you upload an image of part of the font in question and find the closest matches in their database.
